QR codes are very convenient, when it comes to drawing attention from your audience or directing people to your fund-raiser page. The SMiLE team used this very successfully during and after LCI international convention 2015 in Honolulu by making a QR code part of our famous SMiLE Pin.

Part 1 of this article series introduced an iOS based App – Qrafter Pro – for reading and creating QR codes.

This article talks about a very convenient facebook feature, which allows to create QR codes as well!

Part 3: QR codes created by facebook

The apps for iOS and Android introduced so far are a sort of “Swiss army knife” tool. They deal with all sorts of QR codes and provide a rich set of features. The facebook event features comes with a “one-trick-pony” – simple and convenient.

Very often, you will use a QR code to promote an event you organize for your club or district. As a social media aware Lion you definitely consider to create a facebook event for this as well. Wouldn’t it be nice to get a matching QR code directly as part of this task?

Here comes the good news: Once you have created your facebook event, you are offered to simply download a QR code image, which directly points to this facebook event! No need for an extra app – at least for this part 😉

Proceed as follows …
once the facebook event has been created ….

  1. Click on the three dots right below the event banner
  2. Click the download button below the generated QR code
  3. Save the image file

Distribute the QR code image as appropriate for your event. Send it along with invitation mails, use it on your website, print it on your stationary, etc. – your imagination is the limit.

Final QR code & added value for your event

facebook puts its logo in the center of the QR code. This makes it convenient to identify it, but does not interfere with readability.

Do not forget to create additional QR codes, which provide e.g. a calendar for the event or depicts the location in a map. For this the smartphone apps introduced in parts (1) – (2) of this blog post series.can be used.

How to manage Events with Eventbrite.com

EventBrite-LOGO If you are a club that hosts events for the general public, you may find the process of ticket sales to be overwhelming. Long lines, people looking to pay with credit cards, and keeping track of limited space can all take a toll on the person responsible. A great solution if you are looking to simplify your ticket sales and attendance management is Eventbrite. Whether you are hosting a free event, or one that charges a fee, Eventbrite can accommodate your organization by helping you streamline the process.

One of the great things about this online software is that it is an all-inclusive platform. What I mean is that with Eventbrite you have the ability to setup an event website, promote it online, sell and/or distribute free tickets, take payments, manage your guests, and track your progress all in one place.

How it works:

1- Customize your event page with your event information, logo and color scheme. Offer multiple ticket options, including reserved seating and questions for your guests to answer (like which dinner option they would like, etc.). You even have the option to embed this form on your own website if you want.

2- Promote the event through your Eventbrite account by sending emails and invitations and allow guests to use the built-in sharing tools located right on the event page.

3- Allow guests to pay for their tickets online via credit or debit cards using Eventbrite’s secure payment processor or Paypal, or collect payment via cash and check and manually enter in payments. You even have the option to collect donations right off the site. If the event is free or payment is collected via cash/check there are no fees for using the Eventbrite software, however you will be selling tickets using credit card payments there are fees involved. Keep in mind that organizations with 501c3 standing are eligible for a small reduction. Typically however the cost is 2.5% + $0.99 per ticket, plus a 3% payment processing fee.

4- Once guests begin registering you’ll be able to see who is coming, how much money you’ve made (if applicable), and manage the event with 24/7 access to your dashboard and reports. You’ll even be able to check in guests and scan pre-distributed tickets using the Eventbrite app for your smartphone.

Advantages:

Selling tickets through Eventbrite means there is less paperwork to keep track of.  No more keeping lists in notebooks or cumbersome Excel spreadsheets, plus you can access your event dashboard from any computer, smartphone, or tablet no matter where you are. Another nice feature is that you can send messages and updates to your attendees prior to and after the event, should you desire.

Disadvantages:

The fees can be a little costly, especially if you have never had experience with credit cards or your event has a very low admission cost. Fortunately there is a way around this if you are willing to not accept credit card payments. Your other alternative is to only accept credit card payments at the door, in which case you will only be charged the 3% payment processing fee.

All in all, the Eventbrite software is pretty easy to use and has made running events much smoother for our club.
